Washington Post Article Highlights Need For Leaders to Live Values at Work & In their Private Lives

In a Washington Post article by Craig Whitlock titled Navy Has Spike in Commanding Officers Firings he quoted Admiral Roughead as saying:

“The divide between our private and professional lives is essentially gone,” Roughead said in an interview. “People can engage in the debate — does it really matter what a commanding officer does in their personal life? We believe it does, because it gets right to the issue of integrity and personal conduct and trust and the ability to enforce standards.”

Through our GEMS leadership inclusion program everyone from the newly enlisted to Admirals are taught that they are leaders at work and in their personal lives. They have three specific roles to focus on:

  • 1) Their individual selves,
  • 2) Their role as leaders of others and
  • 3)Their role as organizational representatives.

Everyone  is charged with living on a daily basis, with all three roles they embody and  communicate the values to others through personal action.  The core values of the US Navy are honor, courage and commitment. Within the US Army those values are loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, integrity and personal courage.

In your personal life, how do you exhibit those values,  how you  treat yourself daily, how you treat your family and how you treat your relationships.

As leaders who influence your co-workers, your team and your stakeholders, do you  daily check in with yourself asking “as a leader am I reflecting those values I committed to honor?”.

Finally, as representatives of your organization are you walking your talk?  When you are out in the community do people see that you live those values you committed to?

We, you and I, are responsible for our actions.  If you (and I) are committed to the values of honor, courage and commitment. loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, integrity, and personal courage, then we had better make sure we are walking the talk.

The US Navy and US Army rely on Team Pegine Inc. to provide leadership programs for leading in a diverse world.   Call our office to learn about the GEM program and all of our other trainings we are committed to motivating leaders in a diverse world! 904-280-8806
